Buildings are responsible for upwards of 40% of all CO2 emissions. A building's structure and envelope account for more than half of a project's total carbon footprint. The choices that Engineers and Architects make during the design process have global impacts.
The Embodied Carbon Lab at Thornton Tomasetti has calculated the embodied carbon of more than 600 structural engineering projects over the past seven years. Our calculations use the most current embodied carbon coefficients and best practices, and we stay on top of industry trends as an active member of the Embodied Carbon Network and as a sponsor of the Carbon Leadership Forum.
Based on our experience and calculations we created Beacon - an open source Revit plug-in for structural engineers that provides quick, high level feedback and clear data visualization of structural system's embodied carbon performance in the project.
